Meherjaan, the 2010 feature film directed by Rubaiyat Hossain in which Omar had a lead role as Wasim Khan, opened in cities across Bangladesh in January 2011. After attracting sell-out crowds for two weeks, the film was removed from theaters by the distributor. Many quarters in Bangladesh raised objections to the film, particularly the love story between Wasim Khan the Pakistani army deserter and Meher, the title character, a Bengali girl in the backdrop of Bangladesh's bloody struggle for independence. It is currently doing the festival circuit, premiering in the US at the Tribeca Cinema in New York as part of the IAAC's Indian Film Festival in May 2011.
